Metro Málaga

Did you know that there is a metro system in Málaga?

The Málaga Metro is a semi-metro network that links the city centre with the northwestern and southwestern suburbs across two lines (4 lines planned total), with a total length of 13.2 km and 19 stations, of which 12 are underground and 5 are surface-level light rail stops.

With funding for the project coming from both the local and the Spanish governments The metro opened in service on 30 July 2014, as a limited service terminating at El Perchel station, adjacent to Málaga María Zambrano railway station.

The El Perchel station allows a comfortable interchange between both lines without having to change platforms, in addition to facilitating quick access to the AVE, Medium Distance, Regional and Cercanías trains, as well as the intercity bus station.

In March 2023, the metro was extended from its former city terminus at El Perchel station by 1.7 km into the historic centre of the city, which resulted in the increase of the metro's daily ridership from 28,000 users to 41,000 on the first operating day of the extension.

Currently the metro system is being extended with the objective to connect one of the lines to the hospital.

During progress of the works in 2020 a new archaeological milestone was made in history of Málaga. The final works that have been carried out for some months in the final part of the section of Avenida de Andalucía, in the vicinity of Calle Nazareno del Paso, have made it possible to discover part of the medieval wall. From a scientific point of view, the findings provide new insights into what Malaga was in the Muslim era. The neighborhood on this west side of the Guadalmedina river begins to form in the Muslim era and is much larger than previously thought, in the 11th century it was an organized and urbanized extension of main and secondary streets on which houses and public services are located. It was a Muslim suburb, on which the current neighborhood of the Callejones de El Perchel.
